Free Property Resources

Property Research

The industry standard for vacancy rates, this website also provides data for gross rental yields, as well as stock on market, and changes in asking prices and asking rents, all by postcode and property type. SQM also provides analysis on auction markets around the country, with both sales results and upcoming auctions.

Whilst Microburbs does a great job providing an easy to use mapping interface for demographic data, this website is the easiest way to access more detailed census data for a suburb or area. The most recent census was in 2016, so the data is a little old now, however it can still provide helpful insights for transport, housing, employment and income related data.

Domain and REA

Both major listing portals, Domain and Realestate.com.au provide some free data for home buyers and property investors, mostly focused on suburb level median price and rental information, as well as property specific sales information and some demographic data.

An increasingly popular and useful website, Suburb Trends has done a great job in bringing together information in an easy to use interface. Particularly relevant for property investors, what this website excels at is tracking supply and demand metrics at a postcode level, something all investors should consider. Suburb Trends also covers vacancy rates, and sales listings.

Microburbs does an excellent job of helping property buyers visualise demographic, pricing and other related data. It helps buyers gain insights that might otherwise be difficult to find. The ease of use as well as the fact that you can drill down into the data makes this a go to website for many property buyers.

This website helps investors understand how well a property is served, or not served, by public transport. It also maps local amenities, services and key infrastructure. It’s a great resource to help get a quick overview of an area and to better understand how attractive it might be to potential tenants, or to get an understanding of what it would be like to live in a particular suburb.

Homely provides a handy way to get a quick overview of what other people think about a particular suburb, via their ‘suburb review’ section. Of course, as with anything that relies on user generated content, you need to be careful of opinions being disguised as facts..

This website provides some basic property specific information such as previous sale prices, land size, rental history etc. This tool provides a way to research individual properties without having to have a paid subscription to either Corelogic or Pricefinder. Obviously there are limitations with this free service however, and for more detailed data requirements you may want to look at upgrading to a paid tool.

Property podcasts

One of the original property investment podcasts, The Property Couch now has more than 300 episodes. Generally it focuses on property investment and money management, but there are still lessons for all types of property buyers, particularly around due diligence and research. Their website also offers access to a range of helpful free resources, including their “Money Smarts” budgeting software.

Perhaps less well known than the others in this list, this is a great podcast to listen to for home owners and investors who own, or are considering, a strata property such as an apartment or a townhouse. The hosts do a great job in helping to demystify the idea of living in a strata community. In addition to the podcast, Flat Chat runs a popular online forum.

Run by Veronica Morgan, a buyer’s agent and Chris Bates, a mortgage broker, this podcast does a great job in bringing expertise from a range of property disciplines together, with an easy to listen to format. The information is sometimes quite complex, but the hosts do a good job in presenting it in a digestible manner. Refreshingly, they don’t shy away from covering controversial topics, and often tackle subjects that other podcasts avoid.

Starting life as a print magazine, the SPI podcast has grown over time to become a network of property related content, including expert commentators, regular guests, investor stories as well as a range of 3rd party sponsored content.
