Erskineville
A grown up version of neighbouring Newtown, this suburb is divided by the railway line. Terraces, semis and workers cottages are common, along with some higher-density modern apartments in the Ashmore Precinct. Technically in Alexandria, this cafe is frequently voted one of the best family spots in Sydney. It’s even got its own kids terrace. Our pick is the decadent Croque Monsieur – available for breakfast and lunch.
The Imperial Hotel
Made famous by Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, this bar hosts drag shows on the main floor and a nightclub in the basement. Our favourite is the top floor bistro that also includes a lovely rooftop.
